TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Government officially recognizes armed criminal groups in Papua, or KKB, as terrorist. This was announced by the Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD due to the series of terror acts since April 2021.

“Aligning with all of the incidents the government considers the organization and people in Papua who commit mass-scale murder and brutal acts of violence as terrorists,” said Mahfud on April 29.

He believes that this is a right thing to do and cites Law No.5/2018 that describes terrorists as anyone who plans, mobilizes, and organizes acts of terrorism.

The law defines terrorism as an act which uses violence or threat of violence which causes a wide spread atmosphere of terror or fear, which can cause mass victims, and/or creates damages or destructions to strategic vital object, environment, public facility, or international facility with a motif of ideology, politics, and security.

Mahfud MD believes the definition fits the activities committed by KKB and any organizations and people who are affiliated with the act of terrorism.
