TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has suspended giving visas to foreign nationals with a history of visiting or staying in India less than 14 days prior to their arrivals. The decision came following Covid-19 cases surges in the world's second most populous nation.

The visa suspension will be in effect starting Sunday, April 25. The policy will be set forth in a circular from the Law and Human Rights Minister.

"This policy is temporary and will be reviewed periodically," Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Hartarto said in a press conference in Jakarta, April 23.

Other nations that have implemented similar policies include the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Canada.

India had seen a declining rate of transmission during the last few months of 2020, with daily cases dropping from around 90,000 to less than 25,000. However, cases began to surge in early April, and on Thursday authorities reported more than 310,000 new infections.

It was is the highest ever recorded number of cases per day, exceeding the US' 300,669 cases on January 8.
