President Jokowi: Safety of Sailors in Missing Submarine is Top Priority

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday’s press statement requested the advancement for the search of the missing submarine KRI Nanggala-402. The eoperator lost contact with the submarine as it submerged into the ocean near the northern waters of Bali.
The submarine was carrying 53 people on board. The President said that their safety is the country’s utmost concern right now.
“The main priority is the safety of the 53 crew members onboard,” Jokowi wrote in his statement on Thursday, April 22.
Widodo said he immediately ordered a massive rescue mission as soon as he received news about the missing submarine on early Wednesday morning. The Indonesian Navy, National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) joined forces in the search.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto said the search for the missing submarine KRI Nanggala-402 will be done intensively.
“I am sure everyone in the country is focused on rescuing our sailors as soon as possible,” said the minister on April 22.
