Singapore, Malaysia Join Search for Missing Indonesian Submarine

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Military (TNI) confirmed that Malaysia and Singapore governments would deploy rescue vessels to assist in the search for the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine which was reported missing on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. The Indonesian submarine reportedly lost contact 60 miles from Bali waters.

The Singapore Navy dispatched MV Swift Rescue. “It is estimated to arrive on location on April 24,” said the TNI spokesperson Major General Achmad Riad on Thursday, April 22, 2021, in a press conference broadcast online.

Based on the statement released by the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta, a medical team was also added to the crew. It was stated that MV Swift Rescue is a submarine rescue vessel and was dispatched yesterday afternoon.

Other than Singapore, Malaysia sent a Mega Bakti rescue vessel, Riad confirmed. It was estimated to arrive on April 26.

Other countries have offered assistance to rescue KRI Nanggala-402 submarine including the United States, Germany, France, Turkey, India, Russia, and Australia. “We will follow the procedure,” said Riad.
