TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi is determined to draft regulations to create a balance between online and offline businesses so that both can grow healthily as there is no gap.

“Regulating offline business is easier because we have set it, one of which is through labeling and standard. Now, we are thinking about online business on how to develop the same protection as for offline business,” said Lutfi in a talk show in commemoration of the 2021 National Consumers Day (Harkona) in Surabaya, Tuesday, April 20.

Lutfi acknowledged that there were unhealthy competitions in online sales in a number of online marketplace or e-commerces which were evident from big discounts. This, he argued, could kill one of the businesses. Offline businesses in the area could also be affected or die because of massive discount competition.

“In the regulation, people will no longer be able to give discounts or 'burn money' as they please. So, there will be a business balance,” the trade minister underlined.

Lutfi went on to say that the regulation would also strengthen the existing policy on consumer protection. The new regulation was expected to raise consumers’ awareness about their rights.
