West Java Struck by M 4.9 Earthquake, BMKG Reports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that a magnitude 4.9 earthquake had struck the West Java city of Sukabumi and its vicinity, which was reportedly felt until the capital city of Jakarta on Wednesday at 13:28 West Indonesia Time (WIB).

BMKG spokesperson Bambang Setiyo Prayitno in today’s written announcement stated that the epicenter of the tectonic earthquake was detected at the coordinates of 7.4 south latitude and 105.92 east longitude or at sea 83 kilometers southwest of Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi Regency, West Java.

The hypocenter came from 21 kilometers below the ocean bed and is categorized as a shallow quake caused by subduction activities or thrust faults. BMKG detected no aftershocks 20 minutes after the earthquake.

The quake was felt by residents in Jakarta, Bayah-Banten, Pelabuhan Ratu, Palangpang Ciemas, Sagaranten, Curug Kembar. There have been no reports yet about damages sustained in the aforementioned areas.
