TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that a cumulonimbus cloud had formed over the West Java city of Bandung which caused the extreme weather - storm and rained ice - over the east, central, and southern part of Bandung on April 11.

“[It formed] from 13:30 until 15:00,” said head of the Bandung BMKG geophysics station, Teguh Rahayu.

The agency explained that the storm and ice rain the cumulonimbus formation caused was mainly driven by the microburst or downburst that happened that day.

“Based on the satellite imagery, the storm was sparked by the downdraft from the cumulonimbus as the peak cloud reached a temperature of minus 100 degrees celsius,” said Rahayu.

It was also worsened by the fact that the humidity levels were relatively high at 70-100 percent and the thermal contrast with differences in maximum and minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees celsius.

The storm had caused destruction across numerous Bandung areas from Buah Batu, Cibodas, and many Bandung sub-districts were devastated by the extreme weather and the Bandung Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) also reported landslides had happened at the Negalsari village.
