TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) recorded that Mount Merapi intensely spewed incandescent lava quite in the last six hours on Thursday evening, April 8, 2021.

“During the monitoring period from 18:00-24:00 local time on Thursday, it erupts incandescent lava 15 times with a maximum sliding distance of 1,000 meters to the southwest,” said the BPPTKG head Hanik Humaida on Friday.

From 06:00 to 12:00 on the same day, Hanik added, the mountain still spewed hot clouds two times flowing up to 1,500 meters to the southwest and a lava avalanche up to 500 meters to the southwest.

Meanwhile, at 00:00-06:00, there were five eruptions of incandescent lava flowing up to 900 meters to the southwest. On Thursday alone, the volcano emitted 21 incandescent lava and two hot clouds.

The volcanic activity of Merapi at 00:00-06:00 WIB Friday morning, April 9, slowed as there was no incandescent lava or hot clouds observed. “The mountain status is still on alert,” Hanik confirmed.

Potential hazards of lava avalanches and hot clouds of Mount Merapi were predicted to affect the south to the southwest area including Sungai Kuning, Boyong, Bedog, Krasak, Bebeng, and Putih up to five kilometers, as well as to the southeast area, namely Sungai Gendol, up to three kilometers. The mountain’s volcanic materials, meanwhile, could reach as far as three kilometers from the summit.
