TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta provincial government targeted to resume face-to-face learning activities in April 2021. The city’s Education Agency Head Nahdiana confirmed that the plan to reopen schools will begin next week.

“Let’s see it (the school reopening) on April 7,” said Nahdiana after a meeting at Commission E of Jakarta Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) on Wednesday, March 31, 2021.

In the first stage, the Education Agency planned to reopen 100 schools. However, Nahdiana stopped short of detailing the name of the schools. “We are still verifying [the schools],” she said. “The school reopening is in line with the Education and Culture Ministry’s regulations.”

Member of the PAN faction of the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD), Oman Rohman Rokinda, said his side supported the government’s decision to immediately reopen 100 schools next month. The legislative body even encouraged the government to prepare for the reopening of other 100 schools.

“The reopening of 100 schools in the second stage does not need to wait for the monitoring and evaluation results [of the offline classes] in April,” said Oman, suggesting the government start the preparation now.

Previously reported, Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim eyed to resume face-to-face learning beginning July 2021 as the Covid-19 vaccination for five million educators is expected to complete by the end of June.
