TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said that Indonesia has great potential to develop the sports tourism market as the growth could reach US$1.3 trillion or around Rp18,790 trillion by 2024.

“The momentum will continue to rise as we see that its year-on-year growth increases significantly,” Sandiaga said on Wednesday, March 23, 2021.

Thus, Sandiaga added that the ministry continues to develop sports tourism in the archipelago to attract local and foreign tourists such as through marine tourism, swimming events, eco-tourism, and adventure tourism including hiking and mountain climbing.

The ministry has also prepared guidelines for Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability in developing tourism in the midst of a pandemic. “We have drafted the guidelines for the CHSE because we do not want this sports-based tourism to be a trigger for the Covid-19 spread,” he explained.

Sandiaga went on to say that Indonesia has two sports tourism events to be held this year, viz. MotoGP in Mandalika and the Indonesia Triathlon Series. In line with that, the ministry will begin the transition and adaptation from a live sports event to a virtual and a hybrid one.

“If we can control the transmission of Covid-19, push vaccination, and expand tracing, we are ready to hold a hybrid event,” he said.

Sandiaga Uno predicted that outdoor sports tourism will become a new favorite for tourists as it also encourages a healthy lifedata-style.
