TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) senior economist, Didik J. Rachbini, in an online seminar on Wednesday predicted that the government and state-owned enterprises debts will continue to grow throughout the rest of President Joko Widodo’s final term in office.

He claimed that Indonesia’s current debt is roughly Rp8,500 trillion. “And the current terms has not even ended. Once it does, [the debts] could possibly reach Rp10,000 trillion in State Budget debts and SOEs debts,” said Didik in the seminar on March 24.

Didik noted that this must be looked into especially by members of the House of Representatives (DPR) since they have budgeting rights.

“Why is the DPR seemingly helpless and weak as they were under the New Order,” said the Indef Senior Economist.

He continued to compare the state debt differences under the presidential term of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) and Joko Widodo with the former allegedly leaving behind debts up to Rp2,700 trillion. Didik said the finance ministry recorded that Indonesia’s debts by the end of February 2021 is Rp6,361 trillion.
