TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Wednesday commemorated the National Nurses Day by expressing his gratitude for nurses who have been in the front line of the Covid-19 pandemic. He mentioned this in his latest Instagram post.

“For a year Indonesia has been under attack posed by the pandemic and one year where nurses remain in the front line taking care and serving Covid-19 patients in treatment facilities across the country,” the President’s post wrote.

He then conveyed his appreciation for healthcare workers who worked hard with little to no rest in treating patients despite exposing them to a great risk of contracting the virus.

“Beneath their tight masks they continue to smile, speak softly, and are strong to carry out the mandate of the profession. Thank you Indonesian nurses,” Jokowi wrote.

The National Nurses Day was initiated after the formation of the National Alliance of Indonesian Nurses (PPNI) on March 17, 1974. Prior to the existence of this alliance, there were a number of nurses organizations such as the PKVI, PDKI, PPI, and IPI, which they eventually united in the PPNI.
