TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan held a video conference with John Kerry, US President Joe Biden’s Special Envoy for Climate and former US State Secretary, on Friday, 26 February 2021 to discuss clean energy.

Coordinating ministry spokesman Marves Jodi said both leaders also touched on possible cooperation to deal with the challenges of climate change—among them by raising awareness on climate change prior to COP26 and partnership to boost global ambitions.

“Both also discussed the strategies to achieve the Nationally Determined Contributions and efforts to cope with COVID-19,” he said.

In the near future, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will issue its latest reports on climate crises towards which all countries are expected to step up its climate ambitions.

The United States will host the heads of state event on April 22, 2021. The event is expected to cement the commitment to the reduction of carbon emission based on the Paris Agreement.

Jodi said during the video conference both leaders had seen eye to eye that there should be no time wasted in the fight against climate change, and that both nations should start developing bilateral cooperation plans to enhance the scale and coverage of climate ambitions.

Luhut also asserted that Indonesia was pleased to have the United States as a strong partner in climate acts.

“Coordinating Minister Luhut also said that he, together with the Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister and the Foreign Affairs Minister, is set to give a boost to the results of the upcoming convention on April 22, 2021,” he added.
