TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State Secretary Minister Pratikno asserted that the government had no intention to revise the General Elections Law and the Regional Election Law. He said that good regulations should be implemented.

“The government does not want the revision of these two laws. We must not change a law easily, the one that is already good should be then implemented,” he said on Tuesday, February 16.

According to Pratikno, Law No. 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections has been implemented and was considered successful. Even if there were deficiencies in the implementation, it would be the authority of the General Election Committee (KPU) to improve it.

As for Law No. 10 of 2016 on Regional Elections or Pilkada, he underlined that the schedule for the simultaneous regional head elections was set in November 2024. The provision was noted in 2016 and has not been implemented yet, so the policy did not need to be revised.

“[The law] was established in 2016 and we have not yet held that simultaneous election. How come we want to change the law that has not been carried out? Moreover, this law was agreed by the DPR (House of Representatives) and the President, and so it was issued,” he said.

Pratikno hoped there would not be distorted narratives about issues of the revision of the two laws as if the central government wanted revisions.
