TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Mahfud MD asserts on Sunday that the government will not process the official complaint filed against Islamic scholar and opposition figure Din Syamsuddin which alleges him of being a radical.

“There is no single sign that the government has trouble with Syamsuddin’s role as a statesman. He is a critical person against the government, and we are happy with that since the government is keen on critical people,” said Mahfud MD in a video Tempo received on February 14.

Mahfud also took the chance to commend Syamsuddin as a critical figure where “his criticism must be heard” and that the government does not see any problem with his statement. “Those processed by the law are the ones who have provenly violated it like those who want to be critical but are actually destructive.”

This statement follows the official complaint filed against Syamsuddin by a group proclaiming to be the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) anti-radicalism movement (GAR ITB).

The complaint was filed to the State Civil Apparatus Commission (KASN) and the State Civil Service Agency (BKN) after the movement group alleges Syamsudin of violating the civil servant’s discipline.

GAR ITB representative Shinta Madesari claims that Din Syamsuddin is showing signs of radicalism despite being a civil servant or PNS.
