TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Covid-19 pandemic has affected every aspect of people’s lives, including mental health. It made people be more vulnerable to stress which could lower the immune system.

As people continue practicing social distancing and work from home, there are several things they do that might enhance the stress level without even realizing it.

Recognizing your stress-inducing tendencies is the first step to breaking them. Here Tempo tries to compile five habits you have that probably worsen your stress from eatthis.com.

  1. Too much caffeine

Having too much caffeine can be dangerous. It increases your cortisol level which can boost the effects of stress on your body. Limit your caffeine intake to just one to two cups of coffee per day.

  1. Strict diet

Being on a diet affects your moods and stress levels. A poor diet can be detrimental to psychological well-being. If you are trying to lose weight, a healthy diet will serve to regulate stress.

  1. Eating unhealthy foods

Heavily processed foods such as those high in sugar and saturated fats can negatively affect healthy gut bacteria which enhance your stress level.

Eat plenty of probiotic-rich foods, including yogurt, kombucha, kefir, and tempeh, and more foods with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin C to keep your cortisol levels in check.

  1. Lack of exercise

Not only does exercising regularly support your immune system, but it also helps to reduce your stress level. Get at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity three to four times a week to prevent various health issues.

  1. Lack of sleep

Sleep and stress are closely connected. Not getting enough quality sleep, especially during a pandemic, contributes to higher stress levels. You can try taking two naps if you cannot sleep seven to nine hours a night.
