Govt Claims Digital Literacy Low, Solicits Mass Media Assistance

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In commemorating the annual National Press Day on February 8, Communications and Informatics (Kominfo) Minister Johnny G. Plate called on the country’s mass media to promote digital literacy at its most basic level.
Joni said this was because his ministry had been perceived as a blocking ministry as it frequently took down contents deemed violating intellectual property.
“Because of that Kominfo is now known more for its act of blocking and taking down contents. This is the important role the media has together with Kominfo to promote digital literacy at its most basic level,” said Johnny in a public discussion on celebrating the National Press Day on February 8.
According to him, the ministry has taken down 2,859 online contents that had violated intellectual property in 2020. In 2021 alone, which has barely passed its second month, 360 contents that either violated intellectual property laws or copyright were eradicated.
He believed digital literacy needed to be promoted through a strong campaign by stakeholders in the digital realm to urge cleaner and more beneficial contents. “Digital literacy among the public is an essential aspect in using the digital space as a positive and productive realm,” said Johnny G. Plate.
