TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo discussed several issues during a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the Merdeka Palace today, February 5. Among them were issues surrounding the protection of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia and palm oil.

“I emphasize the importance of the completion of new MoU drafts on the placement and protection of Indonesian workers in Malaysia,” said the President in a press statement after the meeting.

He appreciated the Malaysian government’s measures in providing protection to Indonesian citizens in Malaysia, especially during the pandemic.

The two countries, he said, needed to develop a One Channel System to better address issues on migrant workers. “To prevent them from becoming victims of human trafficking,” he added.

Additionally, both discussed palm oil discrimination by the European Union against Indonesia. He pinned hope that Malaysia would participate in supporting Indonesia in fighting the issue.

Jokowi also gave a green light for a possible travel corridor arrangement (TCA) for the two countries, whose implementation would be deliberated later. “We will keep strengthening good relations between the two countries through strong communication at all levels,” said.
