TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim has issued a circular that would effectively cancel school’s traditional national exams (UN) and equality exams that will be replaced with a new type of exams amidst the Covid-19 emergency period.

In the circular, Nadiem stated that this decision was taken to suppress the spread of the coronavirus, which has seen a surge in number of cases, and protect the health and safety of school students and educators alike.

The letter that was signed on February 2 states that the 2021 national exams and equality exams of 2021 will not be a requirement for a student to partake in order to graduate or enter higher education.

As a replacement policy, Nadiem Makarim explained that students will officially graduate after completing the academic programs amidst the Covid-19 pandemic proven by school report cards in each semester; obtains good attitude / behavior value scores; and participates in exams held by schools (not the UN national standardized exams).

The individual school exams students must pass will score a number of aspects such as a student’s portfolio, behavior scores, achievements, school contest achievements, tasks that were passed, up to how students scored in online tests.
