TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Syariah Indonesia president director Hery Gunardi said he was ready to usher the newly-inaugurated state-owned sharia bank into the world’s top 10 sharia banks in terms of market capitalization in the next five years.

“We are aware that our task is not only to merge these banks, but also conducting transformation,” he said during the virtual inauguration of Bank Syariah Indonesia at the State Palace in Jakarta, Monday, February 1, 2021.

Hery explained the transformation would take place in the form of business process improvement, risk management strengthening, human resources development and digital technology advancement.

According to him, Bank Syariah Indonesia is committed to becoming a banking entity that caters to all public sectors. He also hoped the bank could become a modern and inclusive bank that served the public by upholding sharia principles.

“And a bank that customers prefer due to its competitive products and prime services according to their needs,” he added.

Bank Syariah Indonesia is the result of a merger of three state-owned sharia banks, viz. Bank BRIsyariah (BRIS), Bank Syariah Mandiri (BSM) and Bank BNI Syariah (BNIS).

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated Bank Syariah Indonesia today, kicking off its official operations in the country with over 1,200 branch offices and existing units plus more than 20,000 employees.
