TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Political conditions in Myanmar are simmering after its military seized power and arrested leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said the government had not yet planned to repatriate Indonesians in Myanmar.

“There is no plan yet to repatriate Indonesian citizens yet,” said Faizasyah when contacted by Tempo on Monday, February 1, 2021.

According to him, the Indonesian government is constantly monitoring developments in Myanmar. “The situation is being confirmed by the relevant officials,” he added.

Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior officials were reportedly detained by the military early on Monday.

The military handed over the state power to Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Min Aung Hlaing and declared a state of emergency that will last for one year.

As reported by the Myanmar army-owned Myawady TV, the army took control as the civilian government failed to follow-up on alleged election frauds and did not delay the election despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
