Indonesia Records 1 Million Covid-19 Cases, Expert Demands Stringent Rules

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University of Indonesia (UI) epidemiologist Tri Yunis Miko Wahyono suggested that the Indonesian government should implement a stringent large-scale social restriction (PSBB) to significantly reduce Covid-19 infection rate. The statement was made after Indonesia officially exceeded one million confirmed cases.
"Moderate to strict social restrictions must be implemented instead of the current half-hearted social restriction which cannot reduce the number of new confirmed cases in Indonesia," said Wahyono on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
Despite his acknowledgment that containing the viral spread is a daunting task, he underlined that the mortality rate caused by Covid-19, which has reached 28,000 fatalities, must be suppressed at all cost.
Wahyono also fearful of the possible overcapacity of hospitals and other healthcare facilities handling coronavirus cases as a third of the one million cumulative cases is active cases that require constant healthcare services.
The epidemiologist also argued that Covid-19 tests must be propagated and conducted evenly across Indonesian regions, in addition to strict quarantine, isolation, and contact tracing efforts.
