TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) reported that Mount Merapi continued to emit hot clouds until Tuesday, Jan. 26.

However, the agency noted that the sliding distance was still about 1,000-1,300 meters from the summit so that the volcano remained on siaga (standby) status.

As the mountain’s activity entered its effusive eruption phase, Sleman Regency Government allowed 187 residents from Kalitengah Lor Village who had been living in the evacuation post in Glagaharjo for the past three months to return home.

“They are allowed to return home because this year’s eruption is different from the previous years,” said Sleman Secretary Harda Kiswaya on Tuesday.

However, Harda said, people were asked to remain vigilant as the volcano status was still at the third level of Siaga.

“The Siaga status is not revoked. But the threat of Mount Merapi Eruption in Kalitengah Lor is at a radius of three kilometers, so it is far from the danger range and people can go home,” Harda said.
