TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo called for several extraordinary steps to address the global impacts of climate change. He made the statement during the online Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS) on January 25, 2021.

The CAS is an international summit to accelerate and boost global efforts in society and economic adaptation towards stresses of climate change in the future. This year’s event was held online and hosted by the Netherlands government and supported by 22 countries, including Indonesia.

“The impacts of climate change are right before us, especially for archipelagic countries, Indonesia,” he said as quoted from a written statement on Tuesday, January 26. The President underlined that all nations must take extraordinary measures.

First, ensure that all countries meet their Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to combat climate change. Indonesia, he added, has updated the NDC to increase resilience and adaptive capacity.

He also appealed to all countries to raise public awareness in taking action. “Indonesia has engaged its community to mitigate climate change through the Climate Village program which will cover 20,000 villages by 2024,” he added.

He further underlined that global partnerships were necessary in tackling climate change and asked all nations to promote green sustainable development for a better world.

Jokowi hoped the 2021 CAS would multiply global climate actions through solidarity, collaboration, and global collective leadership, as well as oversee the implementation in each country.
