Jakarta to Expand COVID-19 Burial Plots at Rorotan Cemetery

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Rorotan sub-district Idham Mugabe confirmed that the special burial land for COVID-19 victims at the Rorotan Public Cemetery, North Jakarta could be expanded.
“It can be expanded based on the needs later,” said Idham on Friday, Jan. 22.
The Jakarta provincial government is prioritizing two hectares of the total 25 hectares of land at the cemetery to be used as special graves for those who died of COVID-19. Idham said the government had just set up 1,500 graves covering one hectare.
The cemetery is targeted to open at the end of this month as the government is still building the infrastructure, such as the roads and signs.
Space for the special graves in the capital city was running low. The Pondok Ranggon Cemetery in East Jakarta has no more vacant land, while the Srengseng Sawah Cemetery in South Jakarta is nearly full.
This situation has forced the government to set up more burial plots at the Bambu Apus Cemetery and Tegal Alur Cemetery, West Jakarta.
Jakarta’s number of COVID-19 cases keep rising by 2,000 to 3,000 every day. As of January 21, the capital city recorded 239,226 cases with 213,570 recoveries and 3,900 deaths and 21,756 people in isolation.
