TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Heavy downpours in Manado City, North Sulawesi, caused flooding on Friday afternoon, Jan. 22, and submerged a number of subdistricts.

“Yes, I have been informed that floods hit Karombasan, Malendeng, Perkamil, Tingkulu, and Batu Kota subdistricts because of heavy rains,” said the National Search and Rescue (Basarnas) chairman Bagus Puruhito to Tempo on Friday.

Basarnas received information about the floods at 16:00 Central Indonesian Time (WITA), Bagus said. The SAR team then departed to the site as residents needed to be evacuated.

However, he stopped short of detailing the number of people affected by the floods.

“Officers from the Manado SAR team, the Malalayang SAR Unit, the Likupang SAR unit, and the Amurang SAR Post instantly went to the location. I have also been informed that the communication network in the area is disturbed,” Bagus said.
