TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned pharmaceutical holding company Bio Farma Corporate Secretary Bambang Heriyanto asserted that the private COVID-19 vaccination would not be used for commercial purposes if the government opened the access.

“Private vaccination is not for commercialization, but a community effort to participate in and help accelerate the nation’s immunization program,” said Bambang on Friday, Jan. 22.

The COVID-19 vaccination aims at achieving herd immunity that will require at least 70 percent of the population to be inoculated. The Indonesian government targets to inject 181.5 million people.

To reach the target, the government is mulling over the opening of private vaccination. According to Bambang, this can expedite the immunization process in an effort to end the pandemic.

However, the private vaccination will be set up specifically for companies that are responsible for the health of their workers. Thus, the program will not be opened for individuals.

“But, once again, this is not a final decision yet. The government is still deliberating this issue thoughtfully,” said Bambang.
