Meat Traders Strike Rumor; Jakarta Gets 780 tons Frozen Beef Supply

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta government has secured 780 tons of frozen beef supply for this year. The decision came after there were rumors that meat traders in the Greater Jakarta Area plan to hold a three-day strike, in protest of soaring meat prices.
The information refers to a circular from the Indonesian Meat Traders Association (APDI) number 08/A/DPD-APDI/I/2021.
Prices of beef at the market level had been climbing since the beginning of 2021. Suharini Eliawati, head of the Jakarta Food, Maritime and Agricultural Security Service (DKPKP), said that meat prices have exceeded Rp120,000 per kilogram since the Christmas and New Year holidays in 2021.
Nevertheless, she said the public should not worry as there is enough stock for consumption.
"People should be able to get used to consuming frozen meat. It is still safe, and [the supply] is there," she said on Wednesday, January 20.
The 780 tons of frozen beef are stored in PD Dharma Jaya's warehouse.
