BMKG Detects Magnitude-5.0 Earthquake from Java Sea

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the South Java Sea, 116 kilometers Southwest of Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, on the early morning of Wednesday (20/1) was hit by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake.

According to the agency’s information shared through multiple online platforms, the earthquake’s hypocenter is believed to come from 17 kilometers beneath the ocean bed.

This comes after a magnitude 4.6 earthquake epicentered 89 kilometers southwest rocked Gunung Kidul on January 7th.

Twitter users that are based nearby the affected region and also in Bantul, Pacitan, and Ponorogo in East Java, recalled that the earthquake was moderately felt.

This comes after a magnitude 3.5 ocean earthquake rocked a number of areas in West Java on Tuesday (19/1) such as the regencies of Garut and Tasikmalaya.
