Cases Soar Despite PSBB; Expert Advice Lockdown as Viable Option

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Epidemiologist from University of Indonesia (UI), Tri Yunis Miko Wahyono, argues that the large-scale social restriction (PSBB) that has been enacted in the capital city of Jakarta has not produced expected results, which is evident in the rising number of Covid-19 cases.
“PSBB regulations must be handled seriously. There is a lockdown and extreme PSBB options if you want something better,” said Wahyono on Monday, January 18.
The epidemiologist argues that the regulation that the 25 percent attendance limitation enacted on the business sector has failed to be handled seriously, which he said can be seen in the packed traffic on public streets.
“If the 25 percent limitation is respected, the congestions would not be like what it is right now,” he said. “Jakarta would be more deserted if 75 percent of people actually work from home.”
The Jakarta administration for the past couple of days recorded new additional cases that exceeded 3,000 cases with skyrocketing positivity ratio of 18.9 percent despite enacting the social restriction rule.
