TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following news of Listyo Sigit Prabowo's candidacy as the next National Police Chief (Kapolri), Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) secretary Ahmad Fathul Bari hoped that Listyo would not stop the evergoing effort to reform the police institution.

The PKS leader called for Listyo to have a real strategy to improve the police's professionalism and not let it slip "as another empty jargon" said Fathul to Tempo on Wednesday evening, January 13, 2021.

Ahmad argued that the police as an institution must be able to retain public trust after a number of national surveys show public trust toward the institution eroding. Ahmad cited the surveys that deem the institution to be corrupt, unfair in enforcing the law, and unable to meet human rights standards in handling cases.

Ahmad also mentioned the latest police controversy involving the deaths of four Islam Defenders Front (FPI) members on December 7, 2020, where the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) officially deemed the case as a human rights violation due to strong evidence of unlawful killing.

Ahmad has also expressed hope that Listyo Sigit Prabowo must be able to answer questions that arise in public due to that specific case.

Comm. Gen. Listyo has been chosen by President Jokowi to fill the position as the next National Police Chief after considering four other candidates. Listyo will undergo a fit and proper test by the House of Representatives (DPR) on January 19, 2021
