No Sanction Yet for People Refusing Covid-19 Vaccine: Deputy Health Minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The central government has not set specific rules regarding sanctions for those refusing to get the Covid-19 vaccine thus far, said Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono.
“There is no sanction or punishment yet for people who do not want to be vaccinated,” said Dante in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, on Thursday, Jan. 14.
The Health Ministry, he added, would apply a persuasive approach to provide understanding to the public about the urgency of the Covid-19 vaccination.
Previously, Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights, Edward Hiariej, said that people refusing to be inoculated could be subject to criminal sanctions in accordance with Law No. 6 of 2018 concerning health quarantine.
However, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly recently clarified that the criminal sanction would be the government’s last resort. The government would first seek a persuasive approach in the Covid-19 vaccination program.
