83% Health Workers in Indonesia Experiencing Pandemic Burnout, Study Finds

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 83 percent of health workers across Indonesia have been experiencing moderate levels of physical and mental exhaustion or burnout due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a study found by the University of Indonesia’s School of Medicine.
“When we say moderate levels, it means they have sent warnings, asking for help. They indeed need to be helped,” said Dewi Soemarko, the head-cum-lecturer in UI’s occupational medicine magister program.
Dewi revealed her research during a talk show with the Covid-19 mitigation task force at Graha BNPB Jakarta, Monday, Jan. 11. The study was carried out last year involving 1,400 healthcare workers, such as doctors, specialists, nurses, midwives, dentists, and pharmacies across the archipelago.
It was discovered that the majority of respondents or 83 percent admitted they were in moderate levels of burnout due to prolonged stress.
Dewi explained that one of the symptoms of physical and mental fatigue was reduced self-confidence which was considered highly dangerous. “Health workers have to be the decision-maker. So they must be confident,” she said.
