TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo reminded his cabinet to be aware of potential food crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic as had been warned by the World’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The potential for a food shortage, he opined, could occur due to restrictions of community activities that led to restrictions on the distribution of goods between countries.

“We know that in the last few weeks, [price] issues related to tofu, tempeh, and soybeans are caused by that,” said the President at the opening of the 2021 Agricultural Development National Work Meeting (Rakernas) on Monday, Jan. 11, 2021.

He asserted that given Indonesia’s population of more than 270 million, food management must be taken seriously in detail, particularly those for imported agricultural commodities.

“Garlic, sugar, corn, soybeans, and other commodities that are still imported should be handled and seek a proper design to deal with it soon,” Jokowi said. “We cannot use conventional, monotonous methods that have been applied for years.”
