TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria stated that the city government would keep implementing the online learning system for the even semester of this year.

“Once again, the Jakarta Provincial Government, through the Education Agency, continues to apply learning from home for all schools in the province during the even semester of the 2020-2021 academic year,” said Riza via his Instagram account @bangariza on Monday, January 4, 2021.

Riza asserted that the government could not be reckless in allowing face-to-face learning activities at schools given the high transmission of COVID-19 in the capital. “We have to be careful and unreckless. Our priorities remain the same, which are the safety and health of all Jakartans.”

He added that Jakarta respected the central government’s permission to reopen schools, however, the COVID-19 trend had not shown any improvement thus far.

The city administration, he explained, had also taken lessons from other countries that reopened schools amid the pandemic, which led to the emergence of school or education infection clusters.

“We are obliged to maintain the safety and health of our children, educators and students, education staffers, as well as parents and families of teachers at schools,” Ahmad Riza said.
