TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Covid-19 Mitigation Task Force explained a study on the risk factors for the coronavirus disease based on age and comorbidities published in the scientific journal Plos One.

“People aged 31-45 years and 46-59 years have a 2.4 and 8.5 times higher risk of [Covid-19] death than those aged 19-30 years,” said Wiku Adisasmito, the task force spokesman in a virtual press conference at the Presidential Office Jakarta, Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020.

He added that the fatality risk for patients aged over 60 years is even higher at 19.5 times than those under.

Meanwhile, based on the type of comorbidities, Wiku detailed that coronavirus patients with kidney disease are 13.7 times more likely to die than those without the illness.

Patients with heart disease face a 9-times higher risk, patients with diabetes mellitus face a 8.3-times higher risk, and those with hypertension or immune disease have a 6-times higher risk.

Wiku went on to say that multiple comorbidities present a greater risk of dying when infected with Covid-19 than those without. Patients with one comorbidity have a 6.5-fold higher risk, 15-fold higher risk for those with two comorbidities, and 29-fold higher risk for patients with three comorbidities.

According to Wiku, the findings showed which group of people should be prioritized. “If you are in the high-risk category or live with those at risk, you have to be extra disciplined in applying the health protocols,” he emphasized.
