TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta) urges the government to provide free COVID-19 vaccinations for the entire population and must ensure that the vaccines are safe and have been proven to be effective.
LBH Jakarta head advocate, Nelson Nikodemus Simamora, asserts that the vaccines that will be used must be “procured transparently and are free from corruption,” he said Tuesday, December 15.
He fears the government will not successfully contain the mitigation against the larger spread of the coronavirus as he believes the 3T [testing, tracing, treatment] protocol had not been implemented successfully. The same can be said about the implementation of the health protocol campaign; wearing masks, washing hands, and maintaining physical distances.
In terms of the future nationwide vaccination, LBH Jakarta has urged the government to take notice of three critical aspects: the safety of the vaccine must be guaranteed, the vaccines must be effective to protect against coronavirus, and it emphasizes the urgency to provide the vaccines freely.
LBH Jakarta believes that it would not be difficult for the government to do so and emulate the United States, Germany, India, and Canada which has declared free vaccines for their citizens.
