Sri Mulyani: Tobacco Excise Tax Hike to Take Effect in February 2021

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the new policy on the tobacco excise tax hike will take effect on February 1, 2021. So, the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, as well as the industry, will have time to prepare.
“Such as [preparing for] the issuance of the new excise, and the industry to make new tariff adjustments in December and January,” said Sri in a virtual press conference on Thursday, Dec. 10.
According to the minister, the Directorate General has formed a task force to manage the policy issuance and the determination of new excise stamps. The Finance Ministerial Regulation, meanwhile, is still being harmonized.
The Customs and Excise DG, she went on, would ensure that the transition process of the new excise policy would run without a hitch. “I ask all officials of the Customs and Excise DG to conduct dissemination about various rules affected by the excise hike,” Sri said.
“I hope this policy will provide certainty to the industry and all stakeholders, and we will keep working together with various parties to implement the policy on the tobacco excise tax hike in 2021.
Sri Mulyani earlier announced the government will raise the cigarette excise tax in 2021 by 12.5 percent.
