TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The president director of state-energy firm Pertamina Nicke Widyawati on Wednesday said the coal gasification program is the company’s attempt to develop alternative energy sources, which she said Indonesia has an abundance of that can lead to less gas imports.

“It is our effort to reduce fuel and LPG imports in order to optimize our natural resources as energy raw materials that leads to less imports and reducing the trade balance deficit,” said Nicke on December 9.

According to the woman in the 2020 Forbes 100 most powerful women list, the use of the right technology combined with the plethora of resources Indonesia has will not make the coal gasification program an environmental issue.

Which is why she asserts the perfect use of technology to make dimethyl ether - replacing LPG - will reduce the environmental effects from using coal as its source. “The choice of technology is key,” she said.

For this project, Pertamina has partnered with Bomba Group, subsidiary of Berkah Bomba Energi, to produce the dimethyl ether (DME) from coal gasification. Bomba Group currently owns businesses in coal, plantation, power plants, and property in South Sumatra.
