TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian flag-carrier Garuda Indonesia announced that it has opened the Makassar-Manokwari-Sorong flight route aboard a Bombardier CRJ-1000 aircraft twice a week on Tuesdays and Sundays.

Garuda president director Irfan Setiaputra said the launch of the new flight routes is part of the company’s sustainable commitment in providing accommodation and accessibility for people to reach tourist destinations and East Indonesia’s new ‘economic regions.’

“Especially for Manokwari as it is known to be West Papua Province’s capital,” wrote Irfan on December 9. “It is known for its underwater beauty and Sorong which is one of the promising tourist destinations in West Papua.”

In general, Garuda Indonesia hopes to expand the connectivity of the air transport network in the Papua region which is hoped to boost the local economy.
