TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) on Friday announced the eruption of Mount Ile or Ili Lewotolok in Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), was not interconnected with other volcanic eruptions of Mount Merapi and Mount Semeru.

“There is no connection. Each volcanic mountain has its own magma chamber,” said the PVMBG East sub district head, Devi Kamil Syahbana, to ANTARA on December 4. “We will elevate its status if it continues to grow to be more dangerous.”

Mount Ile has been under the monitoring of PVMBG since November 27-29, which also showed the mountain’s increasing activities.

Separately, the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Doni Monardo, said the evacuation of residents in the vicinity of Mount Semeru had been carried out by establishing evacuation routes for both people and livestock.

He also said a new pathway had been dug for Semeru’s lava route, which would help redirect it away from local settlements. Semeru’s eruption and volcanic activities on Saturday last week had affected five villages in its vicinity.
