TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 5,800 residents have been evacuated following the eruption of Mount Ile Lewotolok in Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara. They are evacuated to 20 evacuation sites.

“There is no report of casualties caused by the eruption,” said the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head of disaster data, information, and communication, Raditya Jati, in a written statement on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Lembata Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) recorded that the eruption occurred on Monday, Nov. 30, affecting 28 villages in Ile Ape and East Ile Ape districts.

According to the agency, the refugees needed tents, water, baby equipment, thermo guns, blankets, sleeping mats, and tarpaulins. BPBD had also established a command post to ensure emergency handling.

BNPB Chief Doni Monardo had left for Lembata to monitor the eruption development and inspect the emergency response efforts, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

As of Tuesday night, Mount Ile Lewotolok still erupted at 5:13 local time, spewing ash columns as high as 800 meters above the crater. The ash column was observed to be gray to black with a thick intensity leaning towards the east. The seismogram recorded about a one-minute-and-30-second-long eruption with a maximum amplitude of 20 mm.
