TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI), Jusuf Kalla, on Tuesday, Dec. 1, said that the council is strongly against using the Islamic azan (call for prayers) for the means of jihad, which was done by a number of people in a video that has gone viral.

“The azan ‘hayya alal jihad’ is mistaken and must be clarified. The Indonesian Mosque Council officially rejects these practices,” wrote Jusuf Kalla in his statement on December 1. “Don’t use mosques as a place to entice conflicts.”

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) deputy, Masdar Masudi, also weighed in on the issue. He argued that changing the calls for prayers into messages that coax people into committing ‘jihad’ is not tolerable.

Both Jusuf Kalla and Masdar Masudi strongly condemned the ‘jihad call’ committed by the people in the viral videos. However, they both clarified that jihad in its pure definition does not exclusively refer to violent acts.
