TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The executive director of the Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS), Philips J. Vermonte, said Monday that human rights must be upheld to create good governance.

“If human rights becomes a culture and focuses more on political rights, people’s livelihood, and the social economy, that itself will fix the quality of our relationship between political freedom, socio-economy, and our growth as human beings,” said Philips in a public discussion on November 30.

According to him, countries that score commendable human development and freedom index are those that are good in management.

Citing the Freedom House survey in 1995, 1998, and 2017, Indonesia’s human development has relatively declined despite a growing freedom aspect. Meanwhile, China and Singapore have shown improving human development index despite having a lower freedom aspect compared to Indonesia.

Philips believed that policy makers, politicians, the media, and society in general must better promote and protect human rights in order to champion a transparent governance system that respected human rights.
