TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Doni Monardo, chairman of the COVID-19 mitigation task force, offered an apology if the public was not content with the distribution of face masks at the event held by Rizieq Shihab.

He asserted that mask delivery was aimed at protecting society. “Salus populi suprema lex, the safety of the public is the supreme law,” said Doni in a press conference on Sunday, November 15, 2020.

The task force delivered masks to the organizing committee of the marriage event of Rizieq's daughter because the call for complying with the health protocol such as avoiding crowds was neglected. Since the event was still held at Petamburan, the task force’s last effort was providing face masks to prevent people from getting exposed to COVID-19, he explained.

Doni reminded public figures wishing to organize events that attract huge crowds to suppress the desire and postpone it until the pandemic situation could be controlled.

The delivery of face masks, he underlined, was not a form of support for the wedding reception of Rizieq Shihab’s daughter.

“Giving away masks is not part of the support for the event. Since the beginning, we have always coordinated with the Jakarta government, either the governor and related officials,” Doni Monardo said.
