TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian E-commerce Association (IdEA) Bima Laga on Wednesday said that the coronavirus social restrictions, or PSBB, imposed by the government made a significant impact towards the growth of online shopping transactions.

Despite society’s buying power decline, Bima noted that transactions for basic daily goods up to products for hobbies grew positively.

“The performance had basically improved. However, it does need more effort to maintain a positive performance amidst the current economic conditions,” said Bima to Tempo on November 11.

In a 2020 research by Google and Temasek, e-commerce remains to be the main driving force for Indonesia’s digital economic growth with Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) growing 54 percent annually and is expected to grow significantly by the year 2025.

This growth in e-commerce transactions is confirmed by Tokopedia and Bukalapak, two of the most prominent Indonesian e-commerces. Tokopedia recorded 2020’s food and beverages sales had grown three-folds during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Bukalapak claims sales in its platform had increased up to 50 percent in June this year which is 3-times more compared to last year’s transactions.
