TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Piracy in Indonesian waters has become a serious problem, according to National Police Chief General Da’i Bachtiar. Therefore, the National Police and police institution of the ASEAN countries should tighten cooperation in fighting against transnational crimes. “[In order to fight against piracy], there has to be cooperate between countries, especially as regards the individual authority of each country,” Bachtiar said after attending celebrations for Bhayangkara Day at the State Palace on Friday (28/6). Though the pirates do not use sophisticated equipment, Bachtiar went on to say, the vast size of Indonesian waters makes efforts to fight against piracy complicated. Therefore, Indonesia should cooperate with neighboring countries to patrol border areas. Regarding three Indonesian citizens kidnapped in South Philippines waters, Bachtiar said Indonesia still was waiting for news of the latest situation in the Philippines. The National Police has sent three officers to Davao [where the three Indonesian citizens were kidnapped] to observe the case directly,” he said. (Dede Ariwibowo—Tempo News Room)
