TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Jokowi Widodo expressed optimism that Indonesia is capable of hosting the 2032 Olympics. This confidence emerges following the country’s previous experience of successfully holding the 2018 Asian Games and Para Games, he said.

“This boosts self-confidence and also opens the eyes of the world that Indonesia is a good host for international events. Thus, in 2018 we have officially bid for the 2032 Olympics,” said Widodo when opening a limited meeting on the matter at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday, November 4, 2020.

To host the 2032 Summer Olympics, he added, Indonesia must compete with Australia, Germany, Korea, China, and India. “Being the host of the Olympics is not aimed at showing off, but it is a way to improve the image and dignity of the nation,” the President remarked.

He further asked the roadmap to be prepared properly, based on the timeline set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). “The host will be determined in 2024, and the selection process will start no later than 2023. I think the roadmap needs to be prepared,” Widodo said.

Jokowi opined that the nomination process would not cost too much because the IOC had implemented a new norm on the implementation of the Olympics.

“The IOC is setting a new norm for the host in regards to a cheaper and more cost-effective event. It seems that the philosophy is no longer to show a luxurious Olympics but to what extent creativity and innovation can be carried out under lower cost norms,” said the President.
