TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) called on Muslims in Indonesia to boycott all products originating from France until French President Emmanuel Macron apologized for his attitude that was considered insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

“MUI takes up its stance and calls on Indonesian Muslims and the world to boycott all products originating from France and urges the Indonesian government to exert strong pressure and warnings on the French government,” as quoted from the MUI’s official statement inked by the Secretary-General Anwar Abbas on Friday, October 30, 2020.

The council asked the government to take a stern policy to temporarily recall the Indonesian Abassador to France in Paris until President Macron took back his words and offered an apology to Muslims.

Previously, the government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Macron who let the publication of a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad under the freedom of expression. The government’s criticism was conveyed to the French Ambassador to Indonesia.
