TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the comments made by French President Emmanuel Macron on Islam, one of Indonesia’s Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) highly regrets that such comments were made by the French president.

“The statement was very tendentious and glorifies Islamophobia and will have a major impact on global peace,” wrote NU secretary Helmy Faishal Zaini in a statement on Wednesday, October 28.

Helmy asserts that radicalism and extremism has no religion and that the two traits can be committed by individuals from any religion. He also said that “spreading propaganda” that Islam is a radical and extreme religion is far from the truth and facts that exist.

The NU secretary called for Muslims in general and NU members to not be provoked by the French President’s comment and called for the government to make diplomatic steps in finding a solution to this issue.
